Attorney

Kaufman & Canoles, P.C.

Professional Bio

John is an attorney and member of the Virginia-based business law firm of Kaufman & Canoles, P.C. He focuses on complex civil litigation, financial institution and lender counseling and litigation-avoidance, and employment law.

John is past Chair of the Virginia Bar Association Section on Labor Relations and Employment Law, where he was a member of the governing Counsel for 12 years. He also is the former Chair of the Board of Governors of the Virginia State Bar section on the Education of Lawyers; past Chair of the Fairfax Bar Employment Law Section, and a past member of the Virginia State Bar Standing Committee on Professionalism.

John has presented literally hundreds of Continuing Professional Education, Continuing Legal Education, Financial Institution Certification, and other speeches throughout the country. He frequently addresses industry and legal groups on employment-law and financial regulatory compliance – in his patented, “learning must be entertaining to be remembered” style.

He has made presentations on topics ranging from reasonable accommodation in cyberspace (Remember the “websites for the blind” wave of cases from a few years ago? He won the first federal trial-court and appellate court decisions in the nation for credit unions.) to telecommuting for forest rangers; from avoiding class actions to “diversity and inclusion” in the new world, and from FCRA compliance to the (hair-raising) history of the passage of the GI Bill of 1944; his session on the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, made to a group of federal judges, received praise, as have his employment-law-compliance training sessions for all Virginia state judges, including the members of the Virginia Supreme Court. He has spoken in hundreds of venues from Key West to Oregon, from San Diego to New York, and from New Orleans to Toronto.
